Kilted Scots Invade
the Western Illinois Society

Dr. James Russell of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, was recently the Varrn Gregorian Lecturer for the Western Illinois Society of the Archaeological Institute of America. Dr. Russell gave a lecture entitled "Rome and Her Caledonian Neighbors" at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, whose mascot is a Fighting Scot. When Tom Sienkewicz, the President of the local society, explained this to Dr. Russell and threatened to have him introduced by a piper, Dr. Russell promised that if he were introduced by a piper, he would wear his kilt. In this photo Dr. Russell appears (in kilt) with the Monmouth College Piper who introduced him, Mark Mullaney '08 of Greshman, Oregon.
